Cutting Edge Art And Nudity In Whittlesford?
By Lyn Disley 11th Sep 2008
The new exhibition at Cambridge Galleries, Whittlesford is a stunning collection of work by three female artists. Many large and bold paintings and drawings are on display alongside contemporary glass pieces and translucent photographic images printed on acrylic.
The exhibition includes a number of modern nude figures as part of an exploration of life from the earliest of times to the present. From a study of Dodo beaks to a risqué exposition of an intimate embrace – the collection is impressive and thought-provoking.
Increasingly seen as the hotspot for emerging art in East Anglia, Cambridge Galleries has a continuing mission to expose new artists, combine and explore art-forms and disciplines and to champion artistic talent.
The gentle village of Whittlesford may not be previously renowned for cutting edge art but Cambridge Galleries appear to have a finger on the racing pulse of contemporary culture. With a combination of first class exhibitions and occasional “happenings” where music, film and art are juxtaposed into celebrations of creativity, it seems Cambridge is back on the map of contemporary art and very much the place to be seen.
The gallery has been invited to submit a piece to the Arts’ Council Own Art competition and the selected piece, Tolly Nason’s “Crustaceous” can be seen on display at the moment. The Arts Council Own Art scheme enables selected galleries including Cambridge Galleries to make it easy and affordable for everyone to buy contemporary works of art by offering interest free loans to their customers.
An exhibition of contemporary paintings, drawings, photographs and glasswork, featuring Katie Bailey, Elena Arevalo Melville and Tolly Nason. Until 15 October:Tues-Sat 10am to 5pm.
